Infrastructure upgrades and lead exposure: Do cities face trade-offs when replacing water mains?

چکیده
Concerns about drinking water contamination through lead service lines, which connect street mains to homes in many cities the United States, might hinder resource-constrained municipalities from performing important infrastructure upgrades. Construction on disturb lines and increase levels water. We estimate effects of main maintenance children's blood by exploiting unique geocoded data over 2,200 replacements Chicago, a city with almost 400,000 known lines. By comparing samples at different distances replaced before after replacement, we find no evidence that replacement affects or levels.

Considering Trade-offs When Assessing Resilience
This article describes the development of a prototype Resilience Analysis Grid for rail traffic management. The findings from testing of the initial model led to the identification of a set of potential vectors for improvement, in particular the need to integrate trade-offs. Based on Resilience Engineering trade-off theory this paper discusses how to integrate trade-offs into the system descrip...
متن کاملSexual selection: when to expect trade-offs.
Empirical evidence is mixed for interspecific trade-offs in investment among sexually selected traits. One important reason may be the way resources are allocated among species. Consider a set of species that obtains the same fitness pay-off for investment in song or plumage. Simulations where resources were normally distributed among species revealed significant trade-offs between song and plu...
متن کاملScreening robust water infrastructure investments and their trade-offs under global change: A London example
We propose an approach for screening future infrastructure and demand management investments for large water supply systems subject to uncertain future conditions. The approach is demonstrated using the London water supply system. Promising portfolios of interventions (e.g., new supplies, water conservation schemes, etc.) that meet London’s estimated water supply demands in 2035 are shown to fa...
متن کاملDo longevity mutants always show trade-offs?
A number of genetic mutations that substantially increase longevity have been discovered in model organisms. Although these long-lived mutants have provided many insights into the factors that affect longevity, the results from such studies should be interpreted with caution. In particular, at least some of these mutations may be poor guides to human medical intervention because they often have...
